JB: The microphone I have with y'all, the reach is wider - it just factually is - and I think a lot about responsibility to hear To be the subject of discourse at all is to live a question into the world, so I will allow myself to do that. It’s a different rock show than I've ever experienced. Even the amount of femme people in the audience, screaming at the top of their lungs, having to take up a high octave. It is such a safe-space show, and I'm so fucking proud. I think our community is being protected by the people in it. Everybody is sticking up for us and each other, and there's just a couple weirdos that are very loud. PB: I am mostly proud of the way the discourse, and I'm proud of the conclusions these children are coming to. The reason we're doing it is because we care abstractly about all these strangers and want for them what we could have had.Īlso, we're coming from a position where we're talking to a bunch of young people and we do get to put messages worth hearing out there. I'm extremely proud, and I just implicitly love everybody at our shows at a base level. It is a space that is precious to me - and would have changed my life if I could have been a part of it when I was younger. People are throwing flags at us, young people are making out in front of us. LD: That's why our shows are so special to me: They are very gay. It’s like, queer people saying that you have to acquiesce to one of three queer archetypes, or one of a handful of queer archetypes to be represented. JB: I've spent a lot of my life being a masc-dressing queer person or just not engaging with gender play at all. JB: I don't get as much hate because people are like, “There goes a lesbian.” You know what I mean?

Like Trixie Mattel, if you are really going to protect kids, why are we not focusing on child abuse in churches? Why are we not focusing on gun control? Guns are the leading cause of death in children. There are no actual statistics that support the idea that drag queens are dangerous - it's just not a thing at all. Of course it's completely unfounded for there to be any type of legislation of drag, and there are no stats that show queens are detrimental to children. It is completely heinous that anyone would find it dangerous or detrimental. I think it's a really cool way to play with self-expression. None of us are very femme-type people, so having more fun with our presentation in multiple ways, being more masc or being more femme, just treating it as expression of an aspect of who we are - or performing something that isn't who we are. We've been talking about the concept of drag at our photo shoots. But I do think that something sweet about drag is that everyone who gets into it is a novice at one point.Īnd I love the history of gender play with drag.

Lucy Dacus: I've only been into for the past couple years, just getting into queens that my friends who are really into drag are into, and watching seasons of Drag Race, learning a bit more, so don't come to me like I'm an expert.
